В конце сентября кенийский бегун Патрик Макау обновил мировой рекорд в марафоне. Он стал победителем 38-го берлинского Международного марафона, пробежав дистанцию за 2 ч 3 мин. 38 сек. Длину дистанции смогут, наверное, по памяти воспроизвести многие.

Она с детства на слуху – 42 км 195 м. Сейчас одна из самых популярных мировых констант вроде ускорения свободного падения или температуры кипения воды. Между тем это не всегда было так.

Начнем с того, что даже в историческом аспекте 42 с хвостиком километров – отнюдь не калька с той дистанции, которую пробежал легендарный греческий воин по имени Фидиппид в 490 г. до н. э. – родоначальник жанра и «духовный отец» всех современных сверхстайеров.

Как известно, легенда гласит, что Фидиппид после битвы при Марафоне якобы пробежал, не останавливаясь, от Марафона до Афин, чтобы возвестить о победе греков над персами. Бежал он будто бы весь путь без остановок и, едва успев крикнуть «Радуйтесь, афиняне, мы победили!», упал замертво. Эту сказку сочинил знаменитый историк Плутарх в произведении «Слава Афин», написанном в I в. н. э. То есть – более чем через 550 лет после реальных событий.

На самом деле Плутарх просто повторил, но в сильно искаженном виде, то, что задолго до него написал другой великий летописец – Геродот. Согласно Геродоту, Фидиппид был гонцом, посланным за подкреплением из Афин в Спарту. Он должен был преодолеть своим ходом дистанцию в 230 км. И сделал это менее чем за два дня, что было тоже весьма и весьма круто. Правда, никакого подкрепления спартанцы афинянам тогда не выделили – но это уже другая история.

Разумеется, имеет смысл верить Геродоту – практически современнику эпохальных событий. Он родился через 6 лет после битвы, записывал все со слов непосредственных участников событий – и, очевидно, не сильно погрешил против истины. Ну а Плутарху простительно – пять с половиной столетий очень большой срок как-никак. Это все равно что с Гомера требовать документально точного воспроизведения событий Троянской войны (срок примерно такой же).

Итак, пользуемся мы сейчас более поздней, но сильно неточной версией исторической дистанции Фидиппида. Зато какое облегчение бегунам! Представляете, каково им было бы бежать не 42 км, а 230?!

Когда Пьер де Кубертен основывал Олимпийские игры современности, идея организации такого забега возникла сразу же. Она была высказана французским филологом Мишелем Бреалем, который предложил, чтобы эта дисциплина была введена в программу первых Игр в 1896 г. в Афинах. Де Кубертен идею поддержал, так же как и греческие организаторы.

Имя победителя самого первого марафона в современной истории – Харилаос Василакос. Он выиграл в 1896 г. отборочный забег со временем 3 ч 18 мин. Спиридон Луис, водонос по профессии, финишировал тогда лишь пятым, но в основном забеге преодолел дистанцию быстрее всех – за 2 ч 58 мин. 50 сек. Это примерно в полтора раза больше по сравнению с лучшими бегунами начала ХХI в. Но Луис сделал остановку на пути – для… распития стаканчика вина. Он не устоял от предложения своего дяди из деревни Халандри, мимо которой пролегал маршрут от Марафона до Афин. Может быть, вино послужило допингом?

Спиридон, что вполне естественно, стал национальным героем. На него посыпались словно из рога изобилия разнообразные блага – талон на бесплатное питание в течение года, сертификат на бесплатное пользование услугами портного и парикмахера до конца жизни, а также тонна (!) шоколада, 10 коров и 30 баранов. Местный богатей Аверофорос отдал свою дочь замуж за олимпионика. Сумма приданого для тех времен была очень велика – 1 млн драхм.

Длина пробега изначально не была фиксированной. Олимпийский комитет признавал принципиально важным лишь то, чтобы все спортсмены бежали по одному и тому же маршруту. А точная длина марафона зависела от маршрута, выбранного на соответствующих Играх.

Длина выбиралась достаточно произвольно. Так, на первых Играх ее округлили до 40 км (ровно тысячная часть земного экватора). Максимальную длину атлеты бежали в 1920 г. – 42,75 км. А нынешняя константа – 42,195 – была введена в обиход на Олимпиаде в 1908 г. в Лондоне. Там все, как вы понимаете, мерили в милях, и поначалу планировали обозначить дистанцию в 25 миль. Но когда выяснилось, что так королевская семья не сможет с удобством наблюдать за пробегом из окон Виндзорского замка, увеличили длину до 26 миль 385 ярдов – специально в угоду августейшим особам. А это как раз соответствует 42 км 195 м в привычной нам десятичной системе мер.

Окончательно длина в 42,195 км была установлена Международной федерацией легкой атлетики (IAAF) в 1921 г. – как официальная длина марафонского забега. И с тех пор марафонцы бегают ровно столько – ни метром больше (меньше). Так что в этом году марафонской дистанции как таковой исполняется 90 лет.

И все-таки, даже несмотря на такую стандартизацию, мировые рекорды в марафоне официально не признавались федерацией легкой атлетики аж до 2004 г. До того времени велась лишь статистика «лучших марафонских результатов». Дело в том, что дистанция должна соответствовать стандартам IAAF – только в этом случае лучшее достижение признается в качестве рекорда мира. Марафонские маршруты, даже при одинаковой длине, продолжали сильно различаться – и до сих пор различаются – по профилю, высоте над уровнем моря и качеству покрытия, что делает сравнение недостаточно объективным. Как правило, марафоны, проходящие по ровной местности, невысоко над уровнем моря, в комфортную погоду и при участии пейсмейкеров (бегунов, задающих темп движения), являются наиболее быстрыми.

Считается, что оптимальная температура для проведения марафона – около +12 °С. Температура свыше +18 °С уже считается опасной для некоторых категорий бегунов, а при температуре свыше +28 °С рекомендуется отменять старт.

Женский марафон был впервые введен в программу летних Олимпийских игр лишь в 1984 г., в Лос-Анджелесе. При этом лучший в мире результат среди женщин не сильно отличается от мужского. Он был показан Полой Рэдклиф из Великобритании на Лондонском марафоне 13 апреля 2003 г. – 2 ч 15 мин. 25 сек.

В настоящее время в мире, помимо олимпийского, проводится много других традиционных марафонских забегов. Всего их около 800 во многих странах мира. Наиболее массовыми и престижными считаются Бостонский, Нью-Йоркский, Чикагский, Лондонский и Берлинский марафоны. Они входят в серию World Marathon Majors, на них проходят этапы кубка мира для профессиональных марафонцев. Число участников на старте доходит до 30 000 человек, а порой и больше. В России ежегодно проводится около 50 марафонов. Самые крупные по числу финиширующих – Московский, в котором марафонскую дистанцию преодолевает около 1000 участников, и Сибирский (в Омске).
