— Как возникла твоя страсть к гонкам?
— Я всегда любил автомобили, моя мама говорит, что, когда меня еще возили в коляске, я уже держал в руках игрушечный руль. Но искра во мне загорелась, когда в 4 или в 5 лет я увидел «Формулу-1» по телевизору. А потом я открыл для себя радиоуправляемые машины, обыгрывал в них 40-летних. Папа считает, что у меня была невероятная способность координировать движения глаз и рук. Тогда я задумался о картинге. И папа купил мне карт, не знаю, как ему это удалось, но он подарил мне его на Рождество.
— Он много времени уделял тебе и твоему занятию?
— Он был моим механиком, причем отличным механиком, до тех пор, пока я не уехал соревноваться в другие страны. Он усердно занимался этим, собирал информацию у других родителей, делал заметки. Затем наступил момент, когда наши отношения с отцом стали натянутыми: я был подростком, и, как любой другой в этом возрасте, я его не слушал, мы много ссорились. Вспоминая это, я только сейчас понял, что в некоторых случаях надо было прислушиваться к нему. Он был строгим, но в том, что я стал таким требовательным к себе, его заслуга.
— Когда ты станешь отцом – а я желаю, чтобы ты стал им в скором времени, поскольку это прекрасно, – как ты будешь себя вести?
— Не знаю, не думал пока.
— Поверь, когда ты вступишь в этот клуб, будешь говорить то же самое. Когда Никколо в первый раз назвал меня папой, я потянулся за чековой книжкой, хотел премировать его…
— Я знаю, это прекрасно, и знаю, что я останусь собой. Однако что касается воспитания детей, я бы действовал иначе, чем мой отец, потому что мы с ним разные. Но жизненная философия и ценности остались бы неизменными.
— Когда ты был подростком, завидовал ли ты своим сверстникам, что им не приходится отказываться от развлечений и вообще от всего ради спорта?
— Никогда! Даже мысли не закрадывалось. Друзья спрашивали, приду ли я на вечеринку в субботу вечером, а я отвечал: спасибо, нет – у меня гонка. Я с нетерпением ждал, когда смогу забраться в карт. В школе не мог усидеть на месте, думал только о выходных и заездах.
— Кому бы ты хотел высказать благодарность за эти годы?
— Помимо Рона Денниса самым важным человеком был Дино Кьеза – он заведовал картинговой командой, за которую мы с Росбергом катались. Дино лучше всех, он прекрасный друг, и то, что он сделал для нас с Нико, сыграло важную роль. В моей жизни было два потрясающих года, которые я провел в Италии, и мне там очень понравилось.
— Где ты жил?
— В Падуе, в доме Дино и в отеле, который уж и не вспомню. Еда была фантастической…
— Итальянская кухня – твоя любимая?
— Да. Вершину моего персонального рейтинга занимают два ресторана – один в Японии, другой в Лос-Анджелесе. Называются Giorgio’s, там подают исключительно вкусную пасту. Еще я вспоминаю очень вкусную пиццу, которую ел на озере Гарда, и необыкновенную лазанью, которой меня потчевали в Риме в доме Луки Дель Фанте, механика нашей команды. Я не помню, кто ее готовил – его мама или теща. Мне было 13 лет, и я решил, что не буду пробовать другие лазаньи, чтобы не разрушить воспоминания об этой.
— Тебе надо было попробовать стряпню моей мамы…
— Ты позовешь меня в гости?
— Молодец, сразу берешь быка за рога! Но вернемся к нашему разговору. Даже когда ты выигрываешь, огонек в твоих глазах говорит о том, что ты уже думаешь о следующей гонке, о том, чтобы стать еще быстрее. Многие пилоты после восхождения с последнего на второе место на этом успокаиваются. Ты же стараешься идти до самого конца, и это великое качество.
— Я так устроен. Это касается моей жизни в целом. В детстве, когда я бегал на 800 м, на последних 50 я старался выжать из себя что мог, даже если бы потом упал бездыханным. Но мне надо научиться лучше управлять своими внутренними ресурсами.
— Я сделан из того же теста, но у меня часто случались аварии, с тобой этого не происходит. Когда ты начинал в «Формуле-1», все ждали, когда же ты сделаешь ошибку, а это произошло только под конец сезона в Китае.
— Когда я вспоминаю тот Гран-при, мамма миа… Ты видел, что там стало с резиной? Я обычно не чувствую себя идиотом, если впечатываюсь болидом в стену, – ну с кем не бывает… Но тот поворот в боксы, я его ненавижу. На этой трассе есть лишь один участок с гравием длиной в два метра, и я оказался именно в нем.
— Если бы у тебя была машина времени, ты бы переиграл именно эту гонку?
— Да. Впрочем, это чему-то меня научило, в тот день мне надо было просто финишировать, а я не смог удержать равновесие между своими инстинктивными действиями и способностью думать рационально. Три месяца назад в Монце случилось то же самое. Я шел третьим, это был последний круг, но я верил, что смогу обойти Баттона. Я прикинул в голове, а сердце подсказало, что если догоню Баттона на выходе из Параболики, то система KERS позволит мне его обойти. Вместо этого я врезался в ограждение. Я об этом не жалею, это стало уроком.
— По-твоему, что в твоей жизни может вызвать зависть у такого старого кренделя, как я: твое чемпионство, годы соревнований, которые тебя ожидают впереди, или… твоя девушка?
— (Смеется.) Я знал, что ты Николь упомянешь, знал!
— Я пошутил, вообще-то я женат…
— Знаю, знаю. Но не думаю, что у меня есть что-то, чему ты можешь завидовать. Ты достиг многого в своей жизни.

Ты садишься в болид и показываешь, на что способен, ты думаешь о том, как выложиться, и получаешь от этого удовольствие. Тебя не волнует, что говорят, лучше ли ты Алонсо, Райкконена или Массы. Кстати, что ты думаешь о переходе Фернандо в «Феррари»?
— Он будет серьезным соперником, одолеть его нелегко. Хотя у «Феррари» как у команды не все было идеально в последнее время. В 2008 году их болиды были лучше, плюс они получили много приятных сюрпризов в виде штрафов, которые на меня наложили комиссары, но выиграть все равно не смогли. В 2010 году Алонсо будет сильным соперником, если сможет совладать с болидом. Не знаю, насколько это легко. Физикелле в этих гонках пришлось попотеть, а его, конечно, нельзя назвать плохим пилотом.
— Массе будет нелегко соперничать с Алонсо?
— Фелипе – достаточно быстрый, чтобы идти впереди Алонсо. Но Фернандо очень, очень классный пилот.

Это не обязательно должна быть история успеха, это может быть 7-е место, но заработанное кровью. Лучшее 7-е место в моей жизни стоит больше, чем многочисленные победы.
— А из отъезженных ГП?
— Гран-при Бразилии, после которого год назад я стал чемпионом мира. Давление, которое я испытал на себе в те дни, было пугающим: я соревновался с бразильским пилотом у него дома. Эта неделя была самой насыщенной в моей жизни. И какое напряжение было на последних кругах! Мне приходилось быть внимательным, чтобы не вылететь с трассы, не зацепить бордюр, не ошибиться. Когда я пересек финишную черту, мне хотелось расплакаться просто потому, что это все наконец закончилось.
