Валерий Борзов – двукратный олимпийский чемпион и самый необычный спринтер минувшего столетия. Это последний белый спринтер, регулярно побеждавший лучших темнокожих атлетов на дистанциях 100 и 200 м.

Бег Борзова был уникальным. Специалисты, которые повидали всех его великих предшественников – Джесси Оуэнса, Армина Харри, Боба Хэйеса, Джимми Хайнса, поражались тому, насколько этот белый атлетичный спринтер бежит легко и чисто. Без единого лишнего движения, будто этот стиль придумала сама природа. Откуда взялась эта недостижимая для других гармония?

Валерка Борзов – спокойный, уравновешенный и даже флегматичный, комсомольский активист – с детства чувствовал какую-то необъяснимую тягу к скорости и риску. Бегал за машинами, уцепившись крючком за кузов. Прыгал с третьего этажа с зонтиком вместо парашюта. Однажды ватага пацанов устроила ему разборку. Драться – одному против всех – было бессмысленно, поэтому он убирал их по одному: удирал, отрывался и поджидал за углом. Первому, кто появлялся, – в нос. Догнать его никто не мог. Он даже до школы добирался бегом. Специально выходил из дома поздно, чтобы времени было в обрез.

Тренер по легкой атлетике Борис Войтас разглядел в упитанном 13-летнем пареньке уникальный талант спринтера: способность мозга посылать сильный импульс в мышцы и быстро переходить от напряжения к расслаблению. Позвал Валерку к себе. «Технику» не форсировал, закладывал «физику», позволяющую заниматься любым видом спорта. А в спринте – сохранить ресурсы скорости и обучаемость. Валерка прыгал с шестом, метал диск, бегал барьеры, занимался гимнастикой, акробатикой. И через четыре года, перейдя к узкому специалисту – Валентину Петровскому, еще не будучи «чистым» спринтером, стал показывать высокие результаты.

Валентин Петровский был преподавателем кафедры легкой атлетики Киевского физкультурного института, доктором биологии. И чуть ли не поспорил, что из никому не известного парня сделает олимпийского чемпиона. Проанализировал технику лучших спринтеров мира и вместе с другими учеными разработал для своего нового ученика… математическую модель бега. Борзов и представить себе не мог, что такое естественное для человека движение может быть тонкой, ювелирной работой, где результат зависит от множества деталей. Стал вместе с тренером часами просиживать в институтской лаборатории, изучать спортивные науки. Говорят, у него все было разложено по полочкам и расписано: режим, тренировки, победы, медали, диссертация, карьера, женитьба…

Некоторых его рационализм раздражал и смешил. Его даже называли «запрограммированным». Но для Борзова всегда были главными мысль и точный расчет. Может, потому и сложился этот тандем: тренер-ученый и ученик-прагматик? В 66-м, когда сборная готовилась к мексиканским Играм в высокогорном Цахкадзоре, на третий
день после приезда все были еле живые. И Петровский забрал Борзова. «Твой цикл – мюнхенский, там ты выиграешь», – сказал он за шесть лет до победы своего ученика на Олимпиаде.

К мюнхенским Играм среди европейцев у Борзова не осталось соперников. И американцы уже почувствовали угрозу своей многолетней гегемонии. Шанс выиграть у Борзова в честной борьбе был минимальным. Поэтому было решено вывести его из равновесия. Способ выбрали в условиях «холодной войны» самый надежный: объявили по местному телевидению, что Борзов попросил политического убежища, а потом прислали на его имя посылку с пластиковой миной. Что творилось в душе Валерия в те дни, трудно представить… Но внешне он был абсолютно спокоен. Он и в обычной жизни – человек неэмоциональный. А в спорте это было его психологическим оружием. На четвертьфинал стометровки Борзов вышел в полной готовности. А два американца – Харт и Робинсон – не вышли на старт. По официальной версии – то ли опоздали, то ли проспали. А может, испугались за свою репутацию? Похожая ситуация была накануне, на мемориале Брауна. Двое американских спринтеров, побывав на тренировке Борзова, отказались от выступления. А Робинсон, проиграв ему старт, сошел с дистанции.

И вот – олимпийский финал стометровки. Борзов засиделся на старте и на 30-м метре шел третьим. Но к 60-му вышел вперед. Перед финишными клетками обернулся: позади были темнокожие Тейлор и Миллер. Вскинул вверх руки и пересек финишную черту – 10,14. На этом победном жесте Борзов потерял драгоценные доли секунды и мировой рекорд. Но он мог себе позволить эту игру на публику, потому что побеждал с отрывом в полтора метра. И это еще был не предел, он берег силы на 200 м и эстафету. В финале двухсотметровки нашего атлета ждали три американца. По первой дорожке бежал Блэк, фаворит турнира. Борзов – по пятой, не самой выгодной. Но хорошо ушел со старта, плавно вписался в вираж, пробежал его на инерции и сэкономил силы – 20,0. Финал эстафеты стал для Борзова одиннадцатым по счету забегом. Выступление сразу в трех видах – запредельная нагрузка на организм. Никто из американцев, бежавших стометровку, не вышел на 200 м. А Борзов рискнул. Получил палочку первым… 10 м, 20, 50, 70… почувствовал пощипывание в бедре: угроза разрыва мышцы. Сбросил скорость и дотянул лишь до серебра. «Я по сей день остался человеком без сильно развитого чувства самосохранения», – рассказывал Борзов спустя много лет.

Чтобы выигрывать в спринте, нужен большой запас прочности тканей. На своих первых Играх в 23 года Борзов показал достижения на грани человеческих возможностей. Улучшить их в 31 год практически невозможно. Но он решил: «Не прощу себе, если уйду без борьбы, не убедившись, что выработал свой ресурс». Стал готовиться к третьим – московским Играм. Не пропустил ни одной тренировки и выступал довольно удачно, особенно в эстафете. Но на чемпионате Европы в Праге почувствовал резкую боль в ахиллах. Он повредил мышцы бедра и обеих стоп, когда переходил из юниоров во взрослые и выжимал из себя все соки, чтобы не уступать более сильным и опытным. И вот теперь еще один рецидив, тяжелая травма… Борзов еще попытался вернуться на дорожку, даже сделал операцию. Но здравый смысл подсказал: надо уйти.

Валерий Борзов закончил спортивную карьеру проигравшим, но не побежденным. Именно с его приходом в спринт появился термин «умный бег». «Он осмысливает бег, это победа высокого интеллекта», – говорили специалисты. Конечно, жаль, что не выиграл третье олимпийское золото. Но нет худа без добра. Когда спорт отошел на второй план, он защитил кандидатскую и женился на девушке своей мечты: умной, красивой и серьезной, четырехкратной олимпийской чемпионке по гимнастике Людмиле Турищевой. И они вместе вот уже 30 лет. «Общественная нагрузка», которая мешала тренировкам, помогла ему научиться общаться с людьми, понимать их проблемы и нужды. Это пригодилось в работе: депутата, министра спорта и президента НОКа Украины. А это значит: почти все, что Валерий Борзов когда-то задумал и спланировал, сбылось.
